The federal Liberals in Canada are demanding the Tory government fork over funds to translate H1N1 information into the languages of minority ethnic groups.
Health critic Dr. Carolyn Bennett said yesterday local public health units countrywide have had to use their own limited resources to translate H1N1 factsheets, brochures and websites.
Public health officials in Toronto, for example, translate the information into at least 18 languages.
The funding demand didn't translate well with federal Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq, who said most jurisdictions are making information available in appropriate languages "to the populations they serve."
Aglukkaq said the provinces and territories "are doing a great job in getting the message out."
