The name Coca-Cola was first launched in China as Ke-kou-ke-la. Unfortunately the phrase means "bite the wax tadpole" or "female horse stuffed with wax" depending on the dialect. The company did not discover until after thousands of signs had already been printed. Coke then researched over 40,000 Chinese characters and finally found a close phonetic equivalent, ko-kou-ko-le, which can be loosely translated as "happiness in the mouth".

Another example is the infamous Chevrolet campaign in Mexico.  Chevrolet introduced and marketed a car named Nova, obviously unaware that, “no va” translates from spanish to “it won’t go.”
